PROPOSAL FOR LIFETIME PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WEST AFRICAN MEDICAL MISSIONS

Background

Sierra Leone Medical Students’ Association is an independent medical students association that pursues its aims and objectives without any political, religious, social, gender or any other discrimination.

It is an association that empowers medical students in Sierra Leone in using their knowledge and capacities for the benefit of society while providing a forum for them to discuss issues related to individual and community health, education and science and to formulate practical solutions from such deliberations.

This association represents the medical students of the only medical school in the country presently and currently comprises of just over a hundred and fifty medical students that are members .

The structure of the Association is as follows. We currently have an executive and four established Standing Committees. The remaining two Standing Committees will be established as soon as members acquire training in them, which we hope to accomplish following the March Meeting  2014 in Tunisia. In consideration of the fact that we have only been functioning for about a two years as a revitalized association, we are working towards installing a supervising Council by the start of the next SLEMSA year in April 2014. Other departments may and will be created in SLEMSA as the need arises and as we develop the Association.

All the members of the association comprise the General House which is the highest decision making body of the association. The General House meets regularly at monthly meetings and twice a year at General Assemblies.

The activities of the association are mainly standing committee oriented and the full scope of activities spans over the year. They include, among other things,

i)                    Active participation in national and international health related activities

e.g. World AIDS Day on 1st December in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Government and other Health Agencies.

ii)                  Symposia and workshops on scientific themes

iii)                Health Education and Health Promotion

iv)                 Trainings on Professional and other skills ;                                                                                 e.g.  project management, leadership, presentation skills and public speaking, to name a few,

v)                  Research Methodologies by Standing Committee Of Research Exchange in November 2012 .

vi)                 Freetown mini marathon for awareness on breast and prostate cancer- 5th October 2013.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

SLEMSA is an active student organisation that is based in Connaught Hospital, Freetown. Its has been able to get funds from external sources such as the Ministry Of Health, Ministry Of Mines and Mineral Resources, IPAS, Pink breast foundation, and London Mining for the projects listed above. However, we still lack organisations we can call partners that will be able to develop our human resource as well as help us in times of financial constraints.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1)      To develop the capacity of SLEMSA

2)      To expose our delegates to the enriched and diversified  trainings and seminars available at Meetings to maximize their human resource potential for the ultimate benefit of the Association.

3)      To experience first-hand the organization, structures, procedures and processes constituting your organisation

4)      For SLEMSA to be an independent organisation

5)      For SLEMSA to be smoothly running its daily activities including raising funds, organising seminars and attending meetings locally and internationally.

BENEFICIARIES

These can be broadly classified into two categories:

1)      The Direct Beneficiaries: The general membership of our association.

2)      The Indirect Beneficiaries: Students and Sierra Leonean as a whole.

3)      Your Organisation will be recognised as a life partner of SLEMSA

4)      Your members will be part of SLEMSA programs and activities

JUSTIFICATION

The establishment of SLEMSA by the visionary medical students of yester years and the attainment of full IFMSA membership in 2006 is a testament to the fact that Sierra Leone was once a competitive and formidable force at the international level. To meet this again, the organisation has to establish itself both nationally and internationally. This can only be met by having an interested student membership, as well as having partners that will provide advice, training and funds when necessary. Thus we, the students have chosen your organisation as our partner.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

1.      Positive representation and projection of Sierra Leone and its culture to the rest of the world

2.      Development of the human resource potential of our association

3.      First-hand experience of the organisation, structures, procedures and processes of  how Non-governmental organisations work.

4.      Development of valuable partnerships in the medical field and facilitation of student exchanges
