Executive Summary

Maysha

January 8th, 2014

Maysha is a newly started philanthropic group, focused on nurturing a locally inspired global

health community in East Africa. The idea started in April 2013 between two co-founders, Samali Mutazindwa and Netsanet Negussie; they than invited a third co-founder, Mathew Vicknair to join them. Several colleagues joined soon thereafter, creating an informal group. Maysha became a non-registered organization via the creation of an ‘Articles of Incorporation’ and a board, and merged with an already registered 501 (c) 3, the West African Medical Missions (WAMM) on December 28th, 2013.

2013 was a year of growth on multiple fronts for Maysha. The programming ideas discussed in April formalized into a proposal that were sent with a co-founder, Samali Mutazindwa to Uganda on December 28, 2013. The final proposal was influenced by WAMM’s model, the eventual parental organization of Maysha as well as from the results of research carried out by Dr. Manske’s undergraduate class in global health carried out for the benefit of Maysha. Maysha also created a social media presence and has received some positive response so far from it as well, as from a University of St. Thomas Newsroom article. The internal system of Maysha personnel and communication were designed and were later revamped in October, as Mathew Vicknair became the Executive Director after Samali Mutazindwa stepped down as president. The first grant proposal for the organization was written for the Clinton Global Initiative. The rest of the board has been created and preliminary steps taken for programming actions in 2014. WAMM designated a bank account open for Maysha. Maysha ended 2013 with a full board and internal structure, a completed grant proposal, a social media presence, and 501 (c) 3 status (due to the merger with WAMM).

2014 will be the first programming year for Maysha. Samali is spending January creating partnerships in Uganda utilizing the proposal created in 2013. In the summer of 2014, at least three members of Maysha will be in Uganda working with the new partners to develop the first educational and research programs. These programs will be designed so that they are in part locally owned, with the idea that local ownership will increase over the next several years. In the United States, Maysha will strengthen to promote its programming and create new partnerships to aid the programming. As 2013 was the year of preparation, 2014 is the year of first implementation.

Below is a snapshot of Maysha as it starts 2014.

Future Plans

We will be starting operations in Uganda in the summer of 2014, which will be based on a combination of Maysha’s proposal and input and suggested reforms from potential partners in Uganda gathered this January. We hope to find local leaders that are excited to take part in local ownership of this program, as their input and enthusiasm are essential to the mission of the program.

In the United States, we hope to formalize partnerships with other education and health organizations besides WAMM, such as Hope for the City, whom we have already been in contact. A formal internship structure will be created and first implemented via collaboration with WAMM on a communications team. Maysha will also help organize at least one fundraiser on behalf of the larger WAMM organization, which will be hosted by the African Nations’ Student Association at the University of St. Thomas. We will also develop sponsorships with businesses, and have formalized an agreement with our first sponsor, Widget Wah, which takes effect starting this year.

At the end of 2014, another annual report, which will be released by January 2, 2015, will analyze the plans outlined in this report. The new report will explain in detail how far we have come since the publication of this report.

Sincerely,

Mathew Vicknair
